Owning a Gun Isn’t Enough – The Dangerous Myth of Self-Defense Readiness

self-defense readiness

By Alan B. Densky, Former Deputy Sheriff & Certified CCW Instructor

Introduction: The Illusion of self-defense readiness. Every week, I meet people who’ve just bought their first firearm. They’re proud. They feel empowered. And they believe they’re now “ready” to defend themselves or their loved ones. Similarly, I recently did a seminar on self-defense readiness at a retirement community gun club. The first question that I asked the group was, “How many of you have been shooting for over 25 years?” A lot of hands when up. “Over 30 years?” A lot of hands went up! The second question was, “How many carry their gun when they leave the community?” Fewer hands went up, but still quite a few admitted to carrying when they left the gated community. The third question was, “How many practice dry-fire or live-fire at least once per week?” No hands went up. My last question was, “How many believe they can defend themself in a gunfight?” All of the hands went up!

Owning a Gun Isn’t Enough –  The Dangerous Myth of Self-Defense Readiness

But here’s the hard truth: owning a gun doesn’t make you prepared. It makes you armed – and that’s not the same thing. In fact, the most dangerous mindset a gun owner can have is false confidence. It leads to hesitation, poor decisions, and legal consequences. Worse, it can get you hurt – or hurt someone else. This article is for responsible adults, especially older people who want to move beyond the myth and into real self-defense readiness.

The Psychology of Overconfidence

Let’s talk about human nature and the dangers of self-defense false confidence. When we make a big decision – like buying a gun – we tend to feel more capable than we actually are. It’s called the Dunning-Kruger effect: the less we know, the more confident we feel. We think, “I’ll know what to do if something happens,” or “I’ve watched videos – I’ll be fine.” But in a real confrontation, your brain doesn’t rise to the occasion. It defaults to your training. If you haven’t trained for stress, surprise, and split-second decisions, your brain has nothing to fall back on. This is especially true for older people. Age brings wisdom – but it also brings slower reflexes, reduced mobility, and sometimes medical conditions that affect decision-making. Without scenario-based training, even reaching for your firearm can become a dangerous delay.

What Stress Really Does to You

In law enforcement, we train for stress. Why? Because stress changes everything. When your heart rate spikes and adrenaline floods your system, your fine motor skills degrade. Your vision narrows. Your hearing distorts. Your judgment becomes reactive, not rational. If you’ve never trained under simulated stress, you won’t know how your body reacts. You might freeze. You might fumble. You might make a decision that feels right in the moment – but lands you in legal trouble.

Legal Consequences of Poor Decisions

Florida law allows concealed carry and open carry – but it also places strict limits on when and how you can use deadly force. If you draw your weapon without justification, you could face criminal charges, civil lawsuits, loss of your permit, or financial ruin.

The Lack of Training Often Leads to The Dangers of Self-Defense False Confidence

Many untrained gun owners make mistakes like brandishing their weapon to intimidate someone, escalating a verbal dispute into a deadly encounter, or misjudging the threat level and reacting to fear instead of facts.

Regular Firearms Training Is Of Ultimate Importance

Training helps you understand Stand Your Ground and Use-of-Force laws. It teaches you how to de-escalate situations and make decisions that hold up in court – not just in the heat of the moment.

Scenario-Based Training: The Missing Piece

At CCW Instructor LLC, we don’t just teach marksmanship. We teach decision-making under pressure. Our scenario-based training is built around real-life situations which lead to self-defense readiness. What if someone grabs your shopping cart in the parking lot? What if a stranger follows you to your car? What if your grandchild is with you? What if the threat is verbal – but escalating? What if you’re in a crowded store and can’t draw safely? We walk you through these moments – not with fear, but with clarity and confidence. You’ll learn how to assess threats quickly, when to draw and when not to, how to move, speak, and act decisively, and how to protect others without endangering them.

Everyone Deserves Better Than a Sales Pitch

Too many gun shops are happy to sell you a firearm when you are in search of self-defense readiness, and send you on your way. But older shooters deserve better. You deserve training tailored to your physical abilities. Coaching that respects your experience and concerns. A plan that works in your real life – not just on a shooting range. Our classes are designed for slower mobility, hearing or vision limitations, medication-related side effects, and realistic home and public scenarios. We don’t train you like a 25-year-old tactical operator. We train you like a responsible adult who wants self-defense readiness so you can protect your family – legally, ethically, and effectively.

The Myth of “I’ll Figure It Out”

One of the most dangerous beliefs is: “I’ll figure it out when the time comes.” Here’s why that’s a myth. You won’t have time to figure it out. You won’t be thinking clearly. You won’t remember what you saw on YouTube. In a crisis, you’ll do what you’ve practiced. If you haven’t practiced, you’ll hesitate – and hesitation can be fatal.

Building Real Self-Defense Readiness

Real self-defense readiness includes legal knowledge, situational awareness, de-escalation skills, tactical movement, stress inoculation, and aftermath planning. We cover all of this in our training. Because owning a gun is just the beginning. Knowing how to use it responsibly is the real goal.

Mental Rehearsal: A Powerful -Friendly Tool

Even if you’re not physically able to attend every class, you can still build self-defense readiness through mental rehearsal. We teach you how to visualize scenarios, practice verbal commands, rehearse movement and decision-making, and build muscle memory through repetition. This is especially helpful for older shooters who want to stay sharp without overexertion. It’s not just about shooting – it’s about thinking like a protector.

The Risk of Doing Nothing

Let’s be blunt: if you own a gun and haven’t trained, you’re at risk. If you think that you can defend yourself and your family, I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but you are living in a delusion. You’re at risk of making a legal mistake, hurting someone unintentionally, hesitating when seconds matter, and losing your permit – or your freedom. But you don’t have to stay in that risk zone. Firearms self-defense training is available. Coaching is available. And it’s designed for you – not for someone else.

Conclusion: Don’t Just Own It – Train With It

A gun is a tool. Like any tool, it’s only as effective as the person using it. Without training, it’s not protection – it’s a liability.
